How do you get out of a funk?

Recently our Founder Abigail Barnes has been feeling uninspired and in a bit of a funk, in this post, she is going to share how she used a strategy we teach at Success by Design Training to turn things around!

Don’t get me wrong, life is good, there is much to be grateful for, but I’ve just been feeling a bit meh.

Do you know what I mean?

Have you felt like this?

You can’t really put your finger on it, maybe it could be the weather, the time of year, the lack of sunshine or a combination of everything?!

After speaking to a wise friend it was clear I needed to do something different because doing the same things over and over again expecting to get a different result was’t working!

I hope by sharing what I did it will give you the inspiration to try it yourself.

The 3-Step DPA Process:

1. Dream (What makes you happy)

2. Plan (How can you start today)

3. Act (Just do it)

Here’s how I used the 3 steps!

  1. Dream – What makes me happy? Sunshine, sea, a pool, & the UAE make me happy 🙂
  2. Plan – How can I start today? I started with a Google search, I identified Dubai was the place to go, (24 degrees plus sunshine/6hr flight) I ruled out a spa in the desert, and messaged a couple of friends for inspiration.
  3. Act – Just do it. Then I booked my flight and booked a hotel with WiFi, a gym and a rooftop pool!

Then came the resistance!!!

  • Should I be going away when I have 3 speaking engagements to practice for next month including my own event on 12 Feb and tickets to sell as well as sales, emails, clients and biz dev to do!!!
  • What else could I spend the money on!
  • What will people think of me?!

Can you identify with any of the resistance that came up for me?

What comes up for you when you think about doing what makes you happy?

I’ve said it million times before:

 – Change never feels comfortable

 – There will never be a right time

 – People will judge anyway

Nothing matters more than your happiness, put your oxygen on first, stop giving from your cup!!

If it’s empty you’re helping no one including yourself.


Grab a pen and paper, start small use the 3-steps – What will make you happier today?

  • Going to the Gym
  • Time out (a walk in nature)
  • Digital Detox (go on airplane mode for 12or 24hrs)
  • Cook/make yourself a delicious meal
  • Reading a book
  • Researching a trip

Whatever it is write it down and notice what changes start to happen.
